Hydroponic plants have many advantages

What are hydroponic plants?

Hydroponics comes from the Greek word made up of two words namely hydro and ponos. Hudor means water while ponos means work or power. Hydroponics means strengthening water. Hydroponics is a growing system that relies on water or growing plants without soil. Hydroponic growing has many advantages over planting with other media. Additionally, this technique can also be performed on limited land and is more environmentally friendly with nutritionally superior crop yields.

Benefits of growing hydroponic plants

Hydroponics is one of the most efficient ways of growing. Here are some reasons why we should grow hydroponic plants:

1. Save water

Although planting uses water, hydroponic plants ensure that the population uses water more efficiently. According to the WHO, the Earth will be short of water by 2025, so we must use water wisely from now on.

2. Higher-quality plants

Naturally higher quality as the plants are kept away from nutrients that may have been mixed with chemicals. Planting efficiency is higher because the plants only use existing water sources and further recycle them. As a result, the resistance metabolism becomes more active and plants grow healthily. The plants do not have to be watered either, because the hydroponic system automatically drains the water.

3. pH controlled

If it is a normal plant, to successfully build up acidity, you need to add a dose of fertilizer to allow the plant to grow and absorb nutrients. But in hydroponic plants, you just need to add a PH liquid and control the temperature to make it neutral. Make sure it’s not too dry or too wet.

Advantages and disadvantages of hydroponic plants
The advantages of hydroponics are not only in efficiency but also in the selling price. So don’t be surprised if this one plant is widespread.

There are several advantages of hydroponic growing, namely:

• Guarantee the success of plants to grow and produce optimally.
• Treatment is more convenient and a pest infestation can be well controlled.
• More efficient use of fertilizers.
• Dead plants are easier to replace.
• Working methods are more efficient and have their standards.
• Faster plant growth with guaranteed quality.
• Better crop productivity.
• The selling price of hydroponic plants is higher than that of non-hydroponic plants.
• Some crops can be grown out of season.
• avoid the risk of natural disasters and are not dependent on natural conditions.

Along with the many benefits that hydroponic plants offer, there are also downsides that you should be aware of. Here is an example:

• The initial investment is quite expensive.
• Requires special skills to weigh and mix chemicals.
• Availability and maintenance of hydroponic equipment, which is quite difficult.

Here are the types of plants that can be grown using a hydroponic system:

1. Peppers

Paprika is one of the plants that can be categorized as a fruit, but its general function is to add flavor to dishes. Pepper plants grow a lot in low-temperature areas like Europe and America.

2. Shallots

Onion is one of the ingredients as well as a food seasoning. Planting leeks is easy, choose a clear glass container as the growing medium. Next, provide clean water, gravel to sand for planting media.

3. Kankung

Kangkung is one of the most commonly grown home hydroponic plants. This is because maintenance is pretty easy. To grow kale hydroponically, you just need to provide enough nutrients for kale to grow well. Kangkung can also be harvested in a relatively short time. At 4 weeks of planting time, kale is already looking large and ready to harvest.
Another advantage of this plant is that it can be harvested repeatedly. So when you harvest kale, simply cut off the tops without removing the roots of the plant. Wait a few weeks and the kale plant will grow back.

4. Chili

Sowing is the first process you need to do to grow hydroponic chilies. There are two types of chili seeds that you can choose from, namely local chili seeds and hybrid chili seeds.

Local chili seeds are relatively easy to grow as this seed species has been shown to adapt to the general environment and seasons of Indonesia. Hybrid chili seeds, on the other hand, are more difficult to plant. However, the quality of the chilies produced from these seeds is significantly superior.

To start growing chilies, you need to use seeds from dried old chilies. During the sowing process, you need to provide a place such as a seedling tray and a tray or container to hold the roasted trays that will be placed in the seedling tray.

After everything is ready, add the toasted peels, cocopeat, and sand in a 1:1:1 ratio. Cocopeat is a by-product of coconut shell fiber, which is derived from crushed coconut shells. Its purpose is to hold some water like a sponge. The benefits cocopeat can be a substitute for soil, the function of which is to achieve maximum water absorption so that the water and air circulation in the seedling tray container can last for a long time.

After you have mixed everything, you can water every day and always make sure that your hydroponic chili plants get enough sunlight. After 7-10 days you can place the plant in a hydroponic container for further treatment. As usual, don’t forget to fertilize regularly.

6. Salad

Before planting lettuce, you need to make sure that the lettuce you want to plant is a good seed. Make the first preparations from sowing. Just like other hydroponic plants, starting with 30-40 seeds for sowing.

Sow the seeds in a container of water, wait 24 hours, then take them out after the seeds break up and place them in Rockwool or other plant containers. Wait up to 10 days to see seed development.

After that, you can move any Rockwool into the mesh pot if you are using a wick planting system. Don’t forget to give AB Mix nutrition in a 1ml container. For maintenance, you can pay attention to the plant every 2 days. If it turns out that you have yellowed it, then you need to cut it off. It usually takes 30-40 days to harvest lettuce.
