Precision farming, or crop-site-specific management, is an agricultural management concept based on observing, measuring, and responding to crop variability within and between fields. Precision agriculture research aims to define a decision support system (DSS) for all farm management to optimize input yields and conserve resources.

Precision farming is an agricultural concept with a systems approach for resource-conserving, highly efficient, and sustainable agriculture. Another definition states that precision farming is an agricultural system that optimizes the use of resources to produce maximum results and also reduces the impact on the environment. The concepts considered include a systems approach that considers inputs, processes, outputs, and outcomes.
Today, precision farming is a modern farming system that can be a keyword for realizing sustainable development. Precision farming systems are seen as a solution in dealing with the industrial revolution 4.0 to improve human well-being. The practice of precision farming was made possible by the advent of GPS and GNSS. The ability of farmers and/or researchers to locate their exact position in the field allows for the creation of maps of the spatial variability of many measurable variables (pH, EC, Mg, K, etc.). Similar data is collected from a series of sensors mounted on a GPS-equipped combine. The range consists of real-time sensors that measure everything from chlorophyll levels to plant water conditions, along with multispectral imagery. This data is used in conjunction with satellite imagery using VRT (Variable Rate) technology including seeders, sprayers, etc. distribute resources optimally. Currently, all countries in the world are making efforts to increase food productivity.

The start of the food crisis and an increase in poverty in Indonesia is forecast for 2025. To reduce competition in sourcing food, precision farming is the solution to these problems. Precision farming needs to be implemented immediately as it can help farming systems and take care of the health of the environment. Therefore, precision farming systems can directly or indirectly generate economic and environmental value.

The challenge for Indonesian farmers in the era of precision farming is to be able to master land management, crop management, management of agricultural tools and machinery, both before and after harvest, and labor management. This, of course, will greatly affect the success of implementing precision farming. Accelerating the development of precision farming in Indonesia today is inseparable from the use of modern technology. The technology applied must be able to recognize what is on the land, decide what to do, and provide appropriate treatment according to the decisions made.

The Indonesian government is currently striving to achieve food independence and security. One of the strategies that have been implemented to accelerate food security is (i) increasing food production, which is more widespread and more diverse or diversified, (ii) developing food and local food culture, (iii) upgrading food production systems, (iv) post-harvest innovation; and (v) institutional and commercial empowerment. To achieve this goal, farmers must switch from conventional farming systems to precision farming so that they produce good quality, environmentally friendly organic products. Production options such as organic fertilizers and pesticides are still very limited. Farmers are currently still more likely to use synthetic or inorganic materials to increase productivity. If this continues, land degradation will occur.

Land degradation is a process of reducing the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil such that soil fertility is reduced due to nutrient leaching. Land degradation tends to cause erosion so sedimentation occurs, leading to impaired plant growth. Pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are inputs commonly used by farmers for crop productivity. Several scientific studies have been carried out demonstrating that the intensive use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can cause several important problems, such as resistance and the resurgence of pests, secondary, and kill natural hostile populations, both predators and parasites.

The results of the implementation of precision agriculture are organic products so that they can become equity and sustainable for the community. Recently, there was a very good organic farm in Banyuwangi city, namely UD. Sirio. This company is a business entity located in Sumberbaru Village, Singojuruh District, Banyuwangi Regency. U.D. Sirtanio is known as a supplier of organic grains to the Banyuwangi region, and this small business unit has been selling organic brown rice products outside of cities like Bali and Java, even launching its first export to Italy in early 2019. This phenomenon proves that organic farming in Indonesia still has a great chance to be expanded.

Restrictions on UD. Sirtanio is not yet sufficient to meet production facilities such as organic fertilizers and pesticide products. So far, only animal waste is used to fulfill the diet. Therefore, there is a need to develop superior innovative organic fertilizer and pesticide technology to meet the availability of nutrients required by plants and to protect them from plant-disrupting organisms. Organic fertilizers and crop protection products need to be equipped with appropriate technology so that they can be mass-produced automatically. Products made outside of commercialization can also be a supplier of organic fertilizers and pesticides for Banyuwangi and other cities that need organic inputs. Hence the importance of organic inputs to realize independent organic farming. The advantages of organic farming are numerous, such as: Such as avoiding pest resistance and resurgence, maintaining pest predators so the ecosystem is balanced, avoiding land degradation, and many other benefits. So, in my opinion, organic farming is good for us.
