The structure of historical novels is not so many that pursue them. Historical novels have interesting sentimental values and withstand the storms of time. An example is the work of Pramoedya Ananta Tour.
Although it has now entered the modern digital age. Pramoedya’s works are still admired and interesting because the essence conveyed in the novel is still relevant today.
Well, at this point, some of you may be confused about the difference between a general novel that focuses on the genres of romance, friendship, horror, etc., and a historical novel. Therefore, let’s find the answer to what historical novels are, and what are their characteristics, until the end.
Understand historical novels
Historical novels are literary works packed with the background of bygone places and times. As we know, the past must have a history and its events.
Historical novels can also be interpreted as works of literature that take the point of view and current historical stories. It’s just that it was mixed with the author’s imagination and creativity in terms of presentation.
Thus, historical novels are works of literature packaged and written based on past events. Where the historical novel is written based on the later historical period. Here the author tries to convey in more detail the message of the spirit and the situation that happened in the past.
Features of historical novels
Indeed, if you look at the meaning of historical novels and the structure of historical novels, you can find the characteristics of historical novels compared to other types of novels. Well, to make it easier to understand, here are the features of historical novels that need to be underlined.
Using the temporal conjunction
One of the most salient features in historical novels is the use of conjunctions or temporal conjunctions. Temporal conjunctions are conjunctions that describe the temporal course of events. For example, events in a specific period, in a specific year, or a specific decade. The dot refers to the past “time” reference.
Facts are loading
Perhaps this often confuses ordinary novels with historical novels. Historical novels still contain facts. It’s just that the facts being raised are facts that happened or happened in the past. So historical novels are not just made up of fantasy as a whole. So stay grounded on facts and data.
The next feature is evident in the structure of the novel. The structure of the historical novel consists of several things, namely, orientation, disclosure of events, conflict, the climax of conflict, resolution, and code. Well, for a more complete explanation see the sub-chapter below.
Writing historical novels is easier than writing novels. Because the author only needs to further develop the facts and data obtained with the imagination and creativity of the author, without losing the authenticity of the original historical novel. It needs the ability to coordinate events because the author is a recount of events that happened at that time.
The last characteristic of historical novels is that they are written systematically. So the story is based on the sequence and chronology of the events of that time.
Well, in this section the author needs studies, research, and interviews with the characters. If the character died, you can interview the heirs.
Historical novel structure
The structure of historical novels has 6 structures namely Orientation, Disclosure of Events, Increasing Conflict, Climax, Resolution, and Coda. For more information below:
Orientation is also known as the introductory section. In this section, you introduce the characters and give the reader an interesting description of the novel.
As the most striking feature in the orientation section, the author not only introduces the characters. But it also explains whether there is a relationship between the characters and the setting, which are connected. Well, you can connect based on event background, location, or time. Authors are free to choose.
Disclosure of Events
After introducing the characters, go to the disclosure of events. From this introduction, the reader is slowly invited into an event that causes problems, contradictions, and difficulties.
Some of you may be wondering how you start or initiate a conflict. The method is simple. You need to get a picture in your mind that the principle of a conflict must be cause and effect.
If only conflicts (symptoms of the cause of the problem) or small conflicts are introduced in the events disclosure section, they become large and complicated problems.
When you make a turn. Then the rise of the conflict is at the point before the highest peak of the curve. Characteristically, the characters of the novel begin to show and confront their respective problems. It can also be packaged in the form of interconnected conflicts from one character to another.
The climax is the climax of the conflict. For a curve, the peak is at the highest point of the curve. So the climax of the conflict is the most exciting conflict. In this section, the author focuses on the issues raised. This section also allows the character to resolve the conflict they are facing or fail.
After the climax of the conflict, you then enter the resolution. The solution is a solution to the conflict he is facing. Resolution is the part where the author or writer begins to narrate the final state or fate of the character. When viewed on a curve, its position is down at the top of the curve. This means that the story has found a bright spot and a way out.
The structure of the historical novel after the resolution is the coda. Koda is the end of a historical novel. In the coda, the author is free to comment on his story.
Well, there is one thing that needs to be understood as well. Not all novels have a coda section. There is also a code left to the reader. So if a historical novel is found hanging, it means that the ending is left up to each reader’s interpretation and understanding.
Those are the six historical novel structures to look out for. You can use the six structures above as a basis for writing a novel.
Historical Romance Language Rules
The most important thing besides knowing the structure of historical novels is knowing the language rules of historical novels. The following are the linguistic rules of the novel that need to be underlined.
Historical novels have linguistic rules that use indirect verbs.
The rules of language in historical novels can also be seen in the use of sentences. The average uses the last sentence or refers to events that have occurred before.
Write down what you feel and think using verbs.
Historical novels are written in chronological order.
These are some of the linguistic norms of historical novels that are worth emphasizing. These language rules can also help you in the practice of novel writing as a guide to writing techniques.
Examples of historical novels
After you know the meaning, characteristics, the structure of historical novels, and linguistic rules of historical novels, not knowing examples of historical novel concerts makes it seem less complete. As a popular example that you can read for yourself, there is a novel by Pramoedya Ananta tour called Bumi Manusia.
Although the book does not tell the story as mentioned in textbooks. However, the book picks up on the background of Indonesia during the government of the Dutch East Indies. And in the novel describes what happened then. And the novel remains popular to this day. Therefore, the novel can be classified as a historical novel.
There are also historical novels written based on the character’s history. One of them is the work of my colleague Heydar Musyafa entitled KI Hadjar Dewantara, Understanding Hamka, and Haji Agus Salim. Whereby the book uses the background of characters that play an important role in the story.
From this, it can be concluded that the structure of the historical novel is a work of literature written and related to the history of the past. You can look at it historically in the truest sense. Or it can refer to the story that happened in the past.
