Coping with overthinking can be one of the hardest things for you. What you think may vary. Starting with thinking about something that happened, is happening, to what will happen. This can be due to grief, shame or fear that you have.
Usually, in my experience, it’s hard to sleep when I’m thinking too much. Then what I did to overcome the overthinking was just play my phone, put my phone away and play my phone again. Maybe some of you feel the same way.
In my experience, overthinking can become a bad habit for you, friend, if you let it. Why? Because it shortens my sleep time. As a result, I am not fresh in my everyday life and this affects my productivity.
But don’t worry, you are not alone with this problem. Because usually everyone has experienced the things I mentioned before. Well, on this occasion I will try to share how to overcome overthinking. Curious? Just take a look!
So overthinking is…
Well, the example of what I explained above is called overthinking, friend! What does overthink actually mean? Actually, there is no clear definition for it. Simply put, overthinking means that it’s a habit of constantly thinking about something as if there were no end. In fact, you don’t choose to do it yourself.
People who think too much are usually thinking about something that happened and will happen. This can be due to feelings of hurt, guilt, shame, anger, and fear of things to come. This happens because the person may be obsessing and worried about something. Which can end up affecting their quality of life.
But really, overthinking isn’t a nuisance or a nuisance, you know. Overthinking is behavior where you do it repeatedly. It ends up becoming a habit stored in your subconscious. Of course, this can be a bad habit, so you have to be able to overcome the overthinking.
Signs of Lo rethinking
Now that you know what the dangers of overthinking are, can you start checking yourself if you actually have this bad habit or not? Many people ignore this one problem. In fact, it is important for them to know the symptoms of overthinking so that it does not interfere with their daily life.
The first sign is that you are feeling overly anxious. Try asking yourself. Do you often feel overly anxious because you’re thinking about things you don’t need? If so, you might have a habit of thinking too much.
Thinking too much about the words of others
The second sign is that you think too much about what other people are saying. In everyday life, this part is really hard to avoid. Like you have to meet a lot of people every day. And there were a few of them that you commented on that day. As long as the comments are to help yourself, it’s fine. But what if the comments are negative? Well, if you feel like you’re constantly thinking about her words, that’s a sign that you’re experiencing a sense of insecurity. You probably have a habit of thinking so much.
afraid to start something
The third sign, you are afraid to start something. You’re afraid of making mistakes. Either because you are afraid of being the topic of conversation for others until you are afraid that you will fail. Even if you don’t know if it’s a bug or not.
It’s hard to overcome overthinking what are the dangers?
You may often hear quotes about rethinking on social media. Like “overthinking kills your happiness”. But you yourself may still not understand what the real danger of this habit is. So what are the real dangers of overthinking?
The impact on mental disorders
First, overthinking increases the likelihood of developing a mental disorder. There is a 2013 study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology that says that dwelling too much on past mistakes can increase your risk of mental disorders. Well, maybe there are some of you who still cannot accept what happened in the past.
For example, heartbreak from being turned down from a job until someone you love is left behind. As a result, you may find yourself thinking about it all the time. This can increase your chances of being diagnosed with a mental disorder.
Difficult to solve problems
Second, too much thinking makes it difficult for you to solve problems. Research shows that people with overthinking feel like they are trying to understand and solve their problems (Papageorgiou & Wells, 2001, 2003). Unfortunately, that overthinking seems to be getting in the way of solving their problems, you know. Experimental studies show that people who think too much encourage them to see their problems as redundant and unsolvable (Lyubomirsky et al., 1999).
Maybe you think too much when a problem is overwritten. Suppose you missed the participant card when you were about to take the exam. Then you tend to think about the missed card instead of looking for a solution. As a result, the problems in your head keep increasing instead of decreasing.
Your sleep quality is disturbed
Third, overthinking affects your sleep quality. Research shows that there is a link between worrying about overthinking and sleep quality. Because overthinking turns out to be the main cause of insomnia (Harvey, 2000; Lichstein & Rosenthal, 1980; Nicassio et al., 1985). Well, it certainly isn’t good for you, friend. why? Because it interferes with your sleep times, which can affect your daily productivity. Well, that’s why you need to start finding ways to overcome overthinking.
How to overcome overthinking
After you know what overthinking is and what the dangers and signs are, you may ask, “So how do I deal with overthinking? I’m too tired to think about how to do this.” That’s tired, people at work think too much. Well, I’ll give you the steps to get over the overthinking, let’s see!
Evaluate what really happened
You can try to rate what really makes you reconsider. And be honest about how you’re feeling at this stage. It’s important to be honest with yourself at this stage. Hopefully, knowing this will help you think clearly as you take the next step.
For example, you get really upset when you think about it. Well, you can start thinking about what you’re upset about. Of course you have to be honest with yourself about what you really feel during this time. Hope you can figure out what’s the point of your reflection on you, friend!
tell someone you trust
Try to tell the people closest to you what you really think. You can ask those who might have had the same problem as you. The hope is that you can broaden your view of your thoughts and problems.
For example, you have an issue on campus that you keep thinking about. Well, you can tell your problem to someone you trust. After talking to him, you can ask him for his opinion on how to solve your problem.
Share your thoughts in writing
Remember that you cannot always rely on other people. Because they may also have a busy schedule that cannot be left behind. Well, there’s nothing wrong with trying to be a twilight kid who loves to write stories. You can’t tell others everything, can you? By writing, you don’t have to worry about being yourself. Because here there is only you and your writing.
For example, you think too much and get confused about who to talk to. Alternatively, you can start writing down what’s on your mind. You can use Notes on your phone, on your laptop, or in a journal if you have one. The most important thing is that you can channel your overthinking through positive things.
Focus on what you can control
Focus on yourself and what you can do. Things like: criticism of others that is not constructive, what will happen in the future, the results of your efforts at something, and so on are things beyond your control. If you think about these things, it won’t actually affect your situation.
For example, you’re thinking, “Duh, do you like it if I wear this dress? What will other people think of my outfit today?” Well, this is where you can start to be very stupid. Just be confident in what you did that day. If you want to think about what other people think of your outfit, it won’t change their perception of what you’re wearing. Why? Because people have different tastes in clothing styles and you can’t force them to have the same tastes as you.
After successfully going through the above stages, it’s time for you to take action! Do what you can and control it now. Focus and pursue what you dream of in the future! Don’t regret it because you didn’t try! Remember, it’s not always your job to answer every question that’s on your mind. Think naturally and do what you can control. Sometimes you just have to do your best. The rest, let time answer all your worries.
