The concept of a natural school was coined by Lendo Novo, a man who graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The purpose of establishing a nature school is to introduce children to the environment through direct exploration. Children are also cautioned to respect differences and see diversity as something that needs to be encouraged.
What does the nature school curriculum look like?
Although there are some differences from conventional schools, the educational guidelines or curriculum applicable to natural schools must not deviate from the national curriculum. Broadly speaking, the curriculum in nature schools has three principles, namely:
- Good morals
Good morals can be taught through religious instruction, which must be included in the natural school curriculum. If the natural school does not specialize in a particular religion, the school must ensure that it has teachers from different religions recognized in Indonesia.
Although in the concept of a natural school, children place more emphasis on loving the environment, they also need to be taught about science. For example, using a computer, speaking a foreign language, playing sports, and so on. Natural schools must therefore also ensure that the teachers and teaching staff of the school are science savvy.
The natural school curriculum is designed so that children become leaders, not followers. Children’s talents are developed according to their interests in a fun way, also known as fun learning. In practice, the curriculum is usually taught using the thematic method, also known as the spider web. The method integrates a topic with all subjects.
Here the child’s curiosity is not explored by the teacher through explanations, but by asking him to make observations, make hypotheses, and think scientifically. With the spider web method, students learn by directly seeing, touching, and feeling the material presented by the teacher.

In this activity, children will be introduced to buying and selling businesses and learn how to do business. Some children are asked to become vendors, selling simple items that are then bought by other children, their parents, and their teachers.
2nd open day
The Open House is an annual activity where each student is given the role of welcoming guests who are in attendance to see the progress of the nature school.
Outbound is an activity outside of nature school, the purpose of which is not just recreation, but an exploration of nature through facilities not available at school. Outbound activities are carried out, such as planting fruit in the garden, and harvesting fish in the pond, to test the adrenaline with flying foxes.
In practice, however, learning in the natural school emphasizes the process, not the outcome. Therefore, every activity in this school must make the children happier and not get bored easily, while the teacher conveys the moral or scientific message behind the activity.
